Purpose of the Role

To represent the interests of South Africa at the Board of Executive Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), while contributing to policy formulation, strategic engagement, and decision-making within the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIs).


Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Banking, or a related qualification recognised by SAQA
  • A minimum of 15 years’ senior-level work experience in government, a government institution, a Multilateral Development Bank, or another International Financial Institution
  • Shortlisted candidates will undergo two selection processes:
    • An internal National Treasury shortlisting process
    • An external selection process conducted by the IMF Africa Group 1 Constituency
  • The successful candidate will also serve as the Executive Director for the Constituency from 2028 to 2030

Key Performance Areas

Management of the Office of the Executive Director (OED)

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the OED on Bretton Woods Institutions (BWI) policies, constituency matters, and operational issues
  • Recruit and manage professional staff in line with constituency rules and regulations
  • Act on behalf of the Executive Director with full authority in their absence

Representational Role in the Bretton Woods Institutions

  • Fulfil a dual role as an official of the IMF and as a representative of constituency member countries
  • Prepare, articulate, and represent the views of constituency member countries in Executive Board meetings and committees
  • Engage with IMF and World Bank management on policy and operational matters
  • Participate in domestic, regional, and international forums hosted by constituency member countries
  • Maintain strong relationships with other Executive Directors, including G7 and developing country representatives, to build consensus on key issues

Constituency Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic advice and relevant information to constituency member countries to strengthen effective representation
  • Advise on and prepare policy agendas for Governors’ meetings within the constituency
