Netcare Akasia Hospital invites suitably qualified and experienced candidates to apply for the position of Clinical Nurse (Professional Nurse – PB Qualified) in the Emergency Department.


Role Summary

The Clinical Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised, holistic, and person-centred nursing care. This care may be delivered directly or indirectly to patients, their families, or the broader community.

The incumbent coordinates patient care within a multi-disciplinary healthcare team and applies scientifically based nursing theories and processes. Care is delivered with consideration of the patient’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs, using appropriate educational and technical healthcare practices.


Key Work Outputs & Accountabilities

Consistency of Care

Patient Care

  • Serve as a clinical resource to assist staff in assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting nursing care
  • Communicate effectively with families and healthcare professionals, acting as a patient advocate when required
  • Facilitate communication between nursing management and unit staff to address patient care challenges
  • Assess, plan, and implement advanced nursing care within a specialised emergency environment
  • Initiate and manage emergency and resuscitation (RESUS) procedures within the Scope of Practice
  • Rapidly assess, diagnose, and treat emergency patients efficiently and effectively
  • Conduct patient and family interviews to obtain relevant clinical and background information
  • Participate actively in multi-disciplinary healthcare planning and treatment implementation
  • Conduct patient rounds with medical practitioners and contribute to care planning
  • Develop and coordinate individualised nursing care plans based on patient needs
  • Compile accurate day and night shift documentation, including patient status and staffing ratios
  • Maintain regular communication with the Unit Manager regarding operational activities and challenges
  • Contribute to the development of patient care policies and procedures
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors
  • Monitor and manage the safe and cost-effective use of supplies and equipment within budgetary guidelines

  • Collaborate with other hospital departments to ensure effective support services
  • Work closely with the Clinical Facilitation Department to support ongoing education and training
  • Assist with mentoring, evaluation, and development of nursing staff and students

  • Advise staff on updated policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Allocate and adjust staff resources based on patient acuity and clinical needs
  • Promote effective communication and strong working relationships within the unit and across disciplines
  • Foster positive interpersonal and public relations in line with Netcare’s values and philosophy

Disruptive Innovation

  • Support the adoption and use of CareOn, including electronic patient records, e-scripts, clinical orders, and stock management systems

Skills Profile

Qualifications & Registration

  • Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
  • Post-Basic qualification (PB Qualified)

Experience & Knowledge

  • Thorough knowledge of general and specialised nursing theory and practice
  • Extensive experience in emergency and trauma nursing
  • Trauma-trained (essential)
  • Strong understanding of modern emergency care principles and practices
