Role Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) serves as a shift leader, responsible for managing and supporting the nursing team to ensure that all patients receive safe, dignified, and high-quality mental and physical healthcare within Akeso Clinics.
The RN role models professional nursing practice, ensures compliance with legislation and ethical standards, and supports quality service delivery within a multi-disciplinary healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Consistency of Care
Administrative & Shift Management
- Allocate duties to ENs, ENAs, and HCWs at the start of each shift
- Ensure accurate and effective handovers
- Participate in performance appraisals
- Maintain and enforce compliance with policies and procedures
Meetings & Communication
- Attend delegated meetings (ward rounds, management, committees)
- Actively contribute to patient care improvement discussions
- Communicate treatment updates and operational changes to staff
Resource & Financial Control
- Ensure responsible use of human and material resources
- Supervise medication and medical consumables in line with policy
- Ensure accurate patient billing for consumables
- Report equipment faults and assist with capital equipment planning
Organisation & Supervision
- Plan, prioritise, and adapt workload in the absence of the Unit Manager
- Delegate tasks according to staff competence
- Supervise nursing staff to ensure quality care delivery
Education & Training
- Lead and participate in in-service training programmes
- Mentor and coach nursing staff, ENAs, and HCWs
- Promote continuous professional development
- Maintain accurate training records
Professional & Legal Responsibility
- Practice within the scope of the Nursing Act and Mental Health Care Act
- Ensure adherence to Akeso and Netcare policies
- Participate in policy review and implementation
- Uphold professional conduct and ethical nursing practice
Clinical Responsibilities
- Conduct psychiatric nursing assessments and documentation
- Provide therapeutic nursing care and crisis intervention
- Administer and evaluate medication
- Monitor vital signs and report abnormalities
- Deliver health education to patients and families
- Ensure patient confidentiality at all times
- Support ECT procedures (pre- and post-care)
- Participate in discharge planning and patient education
Emergency & Risk Management
- Respond effectively to medical emergencies
- Maintain emergency equipment and oxygen readiness
- Assist with disaster preparedness
- Report and investigate clinical incidents
Patient Experience & Quality Improvement
- Promote patient dignity, respect, and advocacy
- Support infection prevention and hygiene standards
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Assist in evaluating patient experience and outcomes
Teamwork & Transformation
- Collaborate across departments and disciplines
- Support staff coaching, mentoring, and development
- Contribute to transformation and equity goals
- Promote a culture of professionalism and respect
Skills Profile
Education (Required)
- Registered Professional Nurse with Psychiatric Training (NQF Level 7)
- Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Experience (Required)
- Minimum 2 years’ psychiatric nursing experience
- Experience in clinical leadership
Knowledge & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of nursing and mental health legislation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organisational and supervisory ability
- Computer literacy (intermediate)
- Ability to work under pressure
- Customer-care and quality focused
