Role Summary
The Enrolled Nurse (EN) is responsible for delivering direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN). The EN may function as a shift leader or as support to the RN.
This role plays a vital part in ensuring that patients receive safe, dignified, and high-quality mental and physical healthcare within Akeso Clinics. The EN role-models professional nursing practice and contributes to patient wellbeing, safety, and recovery within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver nursing care within the scope of practice
- Contribute to holistic patient care
- Maintain therapeutic nurse–patient relationships
- Monitor vital signs and report abnormalities
- Administer and evaluate medication
- Provide health education to patients and families
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential patient records
- Promote infection prevention and hygiene standards
- Support ECT procedures (pre- and post-care)
- Participate in discharge planning and patient education
Administration & Governance
- Maintain accurate documentation
- Assist with patient file compilation
- Ensure proper handovers at shift changes
- Support task allocation for ENAs and HCWs
- Participate in staff appraisals
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies and procedures
- Ensure safe equipment use and maintenance
- Report risks, incidents, and maintenance needs
Resource & Stock Control
- Supervise medication and consumables according to policy
- Prevent stock shortages through planned ordering
- Ensure safe storage of medicines and equipment
- Support responsible use of hospital resources
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise ENAs and HCWs
- Delegate duties according to competence and scope of practice
- Support staff performance and productivity
- Promote teamwork and collaboration
Meetings & Communication
- Attend ward rounds and delegated meetings
- Actively contribute to quality improvement discussions
- Communicate patient care updates to the nursing team
Education & Training
- Participate in in-service training programmes
- Mentor and support junior staff
- Promote continuous professional development
- Maintain training records
- Use daily work opportunities for staff development (“teachable moments”)
Emergency & Safety
- Respond effectively to medical emergencies
- Maintain emergency equipment and oxygen readiness
- Assist in disaster preparedness
- Comply with health and safety regulations
Professional Conduct
- Maintain patient dignity, respect, and confidentiality
- Act ethically and professionally at all times

Requirements
Education (Required)
- Registered with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse (NQF Level 3)
- Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
- Compliance with SANC code and healthcare legislation
Experience (Required)
- Minimum 2 years’ psychiatric nursing experience
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of nursing and mental health legislation
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Good organisational and supervisory ability
- Computer literacy
- High ethical and professional standards
Physical & Inherent Requirements
- Ability to work flexible hours (including weekends and night shifts)
- Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders
